Niall Ferguson's argument focuses on quality not equality. He is arguing that a state monopoly does not raise standards and that there need to be alternatives. As a teacher in an independent school surrounded by a plethora of other good schools, I appreciate that parents will/should not pay a premium when there are schools (especially those within the Maintained Sector) which provide a rigorous education.
